What is Podcasting and How Anyone can Enjoy It
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

What is podcasting? Podcasting is a relatively new technological innovation which combines the power of Apple’s iPod and iTunes service with traditional broadcasting techniques. It is a brand new method of distributing audio or video content to thousands of people worldwide in a handy, downloadable format. People are able to download individual episodes or subscribe to a podcast so they can always have the newest episode right on their computer as soon as it is released. The essence of the podcasting scene is about people creating content people are able to listen to when they want to listen to it, not when some radio or television producer thinks you should watch or listen to it. All of this seems like a great deal, so you may be thinking “what is podcasting going to cost?” The simple fact is that podcasting is totally free of charge.

What is podcasting going to benefit you with? With the power of the podcast, anyone can listen to whatever they want, whenever they want. Perhaps you have always wanted to check out what the National Public Radio is talking about, but the only time you have to listen to the radio is when your favorite talk show host is doing his show. You do not want to miss a minute of his valuable advice, so you never change the radio station. Following the example, with podcasting you are able to download any shows you want from NPR to listen to at your discretion. Even better, if you have a favorite radio program from your favorite host, chances are you can download that episode as well. As an added benefit from podcasting, anyone can create a feed and distribute it over the internet, meaning that independent talk show hosts and musicians now have a platform from which to get discovered.

What is podcasting going to require? Many people think that in order to enjoy the benefits from a podcast, they will have to purchase an iPod. They would be wrong. Individual podcasts and subscriptions are downloaded directly to your computer, where you can listen to them with your favorite computer based music player. To truly dive into podcasting however, downloading a copy of Apple’s iTunes is a must, as it offers a huge library of past and present podcasts for you discover.
