It’s not Just for Apples Anymore – Windows Podcasting is Taking the World by Storm
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

The infamous iPod, iTunes and podcasting were all synonymous with Apple Computers for several years. Owners of Windows based PCs were jealous for some time as they wished the iPod would function with their computers as well as they did on PowerMacs. That was until Apple decided to branch out into the world and market their products to Windows users as well. Windows podcasting was born almost overnight. It was at that point when people on PCs could download copies of iTunes, subscribe to podcasts and play the feeds on their newly compatible iPods. This was also the point when Windows users began to create their own podcasts and dive into the podcasting scene head first.

Although iTunes is, without a doubt, the best program for listening to Windows podcasting feeds. However, since podcasts became available to the world of Windows, there are now at least eight different ways for a user to enjoy their podcast feeds. This is more than double the amount available to Mac OSX users. Such programs range from multimedia bonanzas like jPodder and Juice to simple shareware programs centered around RSS podcasting like RSSRadio. Windows podcasting, at least from a listener’s standpoint, has certainly taken off in recent years with the huge variety of different podcatchers.

For those who want to actively participate in the Windows podcasting scene by creating your own podcast, you are in luck. Even without the hugely popular and successful iLife program which Apple users have the luxury making their podcasts with, there is still a variety of other audio editing software on the market for Windows podcasting. For amateurs who do not want to shell out large amounts of money for professional audio editing software, think about Audacity, a totally free sound editor which will let you clean up and edit a raw recording from your computer’s microphone in minutes. With this program in hand, even an individual with no background in Windows podcasting can sound like a professional radio host in a matter of minutes.

iTunes U has been around for a long time, but its expansion last week onto iPhones and iPads , as well as into new content like K-12 curriculum, has truly made this a 2.0 release.
