How Podcasting Can Expand Your Horizons
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

With the current amount of hype surrounding Apple’s infamous iPod, there is no doubt that you have heard the term podcasting mentioned somewhere in the news or on a website. While many think that you need an iPod to delve into the podcasting scene, the fact is that all podcasts can be listened to on your home computer, whether you are running Windows or the Apple OSX. Aside from offering a clever combination of the words iPod and broadcasting, podcasting is a valuable resource to help listeners learn more about the world around them.

Essentially, a podcast is a downloadable audio or video file which can be played on your computer or iPod (and now some cell phones). The most important different between the podcast and traditional online broadcasting is the fact that the podcast is downloadable, so an internet connection is only required during the download, not through the entire program. This innovation also completely eliminates the instability of traditional streaming online broadcasting seen when the playtime of a file caught up to the end of the streaming section. Unfortunately, the only real drawback of the download system is that if you are not careful, it can be very easy to fill up any free space on your hard drive with a myriad of different podcasts. However, each and every podcast you have listened to will be deleted at your discretion.

Through the use of Apple’s iTunes service, people are able to download individual episodes or subscribe to any of a number of different podcasts. With a subscription to a podcast, a listener will automatically download each new episode as soon as it is released so you never miss a beat or an opinion. There are currently podcasts available from big name radio talk show hosts like Jim Cramer and Rush Limbaugh. In contrast to these heavy hitters, some independent music and talk programs are also now readily available to the world through the magic of podcasting. Because of the introduction of independent sources, podcast listeners are able to expand their musical and informational horizons and can experiment with different music or socioeconomic thought that they may not have known about without the power of podcasting.
